Faculty Positions

Ohio University, Tenure-track Assistant Professor (Theoretical Nuclear Physics)
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Ohio University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Theoretical Nuclear Physics beginning in August 2022. The initial appointment is partially funded by the FRIB Theory Alliance. We seek a colleague who will establish a vigorous, independent research program that contributes strongly to FRIB Science: the fundamental interactions of nuclei, their structure and reactions, and their origin in the universe. WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY IN ST. LOUIS, Department of Physics – Assistant or Associate Professor in Astrophysics, Cosmology, Particle Physics, or Nuclear Physics
The Department of Physics at Washington University in St. Louis (https://physics.wustl.edu) invites applications for a tenure-track/tenured faculty appointment in Physics at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to begin in the fall semester of 2021. A Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related discipline is required at the time of appointment. We invite applicants in all areas of theoretical, observational, and experimental astrophysics, cosmology, particle physics and nuclear physics who specialize in the use of data-intensive methods, data mining, statistics, large-scale computer simulations, machine learning, neural network, and GPU computing. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, simulations of astrophysical processes (e.g. black hole and neutron star accretion or merger, cosmological simulations), processing large data sets (e.g., gravitational wave, cosmological, multi-wavelength and multi-messenger data sets), and statistical, uncertainty quantification, and Bayesian analyses.

The hire forms part of Washington University’s Digital Transformation initiative, in which 14 faculty members are hired in departments across the schools of Arts & Sciences (https://bit.ly/artscidigital). The ability and willingness to collaborate with colleagues across traditional discipline boundaries will be considered as a strength of the application. Furthermore, a joint appointment with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics (https://math.wustl.edu) can be considered if appropriate. The faculty hire will be a member of the McDonnell Center for the Space Sciences (https://mcss.wustl.edu). The successful candidate will conduct an independent research program, teach typically one class per semester, and advise undergraduate and graduate students. FRIB Theory Fellow(s)
The FRIB Theory Alliance is seeking outstanding candidates for up to two FRIB Theory Fellows, to be hosted by a Partner Institution (listed below). The successful candidate(s) will conduct independent or collaborative research on nuclear structure, reactions, astrophysics, and/or fundamental symmetries relevant to the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). The FRIB Theory Alliance is a consortium of universities and national laboratories actively engaged in theoretical research in FRIB science. FRIB will be a new national user facility for nuclear science, funded by the DOE Office of Science and operated by Michigan State University.

The FRIB Theory Fellowship is a two-year position with the possibility of renewal for a maximum of five years. The initial stipend is $77k and this position has an annual travel budget of up to $10k. This FRIB Theory Fellow will be an employee of Michigan State University stationed at a hosting institution by mutual agreement. The successful candidates must demonstrate great promise for high achievement in FRIB science. Past fellows have a track record of moving directly into open faculty or permanent staff positions.

Postdoc Position in Effective Field Theory for the Many-Body Problem
There will be a postdoc opening in effective field theory for the many-body problem at IJCLab, a new institute formed in Orsay by the fusion of IPNO and other labs. This is a two-year position starting in the fall 2021. We seek a researcher with experience in ab initio many-body methods, preferably Monte Carlo, and/or effective field theory. Postdoctoral position at Washington University
The Nuclear/Particle Theory Group at Washington University in St. Louis anticipates an opening for a postdoctoral position in theoretical nuclear physics starting in the Summer of 2019 (dates are flexible). The successful candidate will be working with Profs. Pastore and Piarulli, and collaborators. Other relevant faculty include Mark Alford, Dev Bhupal, Wim Dickhoff, Francesc Ferrer, and Mike Ogilvie. Postdoc Position at Ohio University
The Nuclear Theory Group at Ohio University anticipates hiring a post-doctoral research associate to take up a position starting in the Fall of 2019. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in physics (or anticipate having a Ph.D. in hand by September 2019). The research interests of the group cover a broad range of topics: nuclear and electromagnetic reactions in light systems, reactions involving nuclei near the neutron- and proton-driplines with particular emphasis on halo nuclei and direct reactions, and microphysics of core- collapse supernovae, young and old neutron stars, and binary mergers of compact stars. We attack these problems using a variety of forefront techniques including effective field theory, Faddeev techniques, Bayesian uncertainty quantification, and finite-temperature methods. We expect the successful candidate to contribute to these efforts. Thus applicants should have a strong research record and display significant initiative to complement their research skills.
